ADJUSTMENTS/ MANIPULATION
The term "adjustment" refers to the specific manipulation chiropractors apply to vertebrae that have abnormal movement patterns or fail to function normally. The objective of the chiropractic treatment is to reduce the subluxation, which results in an increased range of motion, reduction in nerve irritation and improved function.
The adjustment performed by the chiropractor consists of a low force, high velocity thrust applied to a vertebra, which may be accompanied by an audible release of gas (joint cavitation). The audible sound may also be caused by the ligamentous release of the vertebral joint itself. The sensation is usually relieving, though minor discomfort has been reported (this usually lasts for only a short period of time) if the surrounding muscles are in spasm or the patient tenses up during the chiropractic procedure.
There are times when joint cavitation or the audible sound does not always occur. This is normal and does not always mean that the procedure was inneffective.
The chiropractor may perform the adjustment manually (with the hands) or with an adjusting instrument called an "Impulse Adjuster".
